3 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Skincare Routine

Posted by Vanity Planet on May 11, 2016 11:30:00 AM
We generally believe the adage that “ if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it”, but we have to say that a skincare routine is not something that should stay stagnant for years and years. In fact, you should periodically upgrade your skincare routine in order to cater to your skin’s ever-changing needs, your changing environment, and advances in the science of skincare. If you’re looking to upgrade your skincare routine but aren’t quite sure where to start, check out our skincare tips below:

Try the Spin for Perfect Skin.  We love the Spin for Perfect Skin, our readers love the Spin for Perfect Skin, and frankly, we’re pretty darn sure that you will too. The Spin for Perfect Skin is the ideal all-in-one device for those looking for a thorough, luxurious cleansing and exfoliating experience without having to rely on a cache of loofahs, brushes, and exfoliating mitts. The brush comes with four attachment heads: a Cleansing Brush, Body Brush, Exfoliating Brush, and Pumice Stone. Both the Cleansing Brush and Body Brush use ultra-soft bristles to smoothly remove the superficial layers of dead skin cells, dirt, oil, and skincare product residue that dull the skin on the face and body, respectively.

After prepping your skin with the Cleansing Brush and Body Brush, we recommend using the Exfoliating Brush’s hygienic and quick-drying bristles to extract deep-set dead skin cells from the lower layers of skin.  If your knees, elbows, or heels are particularly callused and resistant to most attempts at exfoliation, then our Pumice Stone attachment will do the trick. The Pumice Stone effectively smoothes away particularly rough calluses and buffs away any remaining flakes of skin to reveal silky smooth skin..

So there you have it – the Spin for Perfect Skin is a four-in-one skincare routine that is capable of cleansing both the face and body, exfoliating the skin, and even eradicating gnarly patches of dried skin. In short, it’s the best skincare upgrade that you’ll ever make; we guarantee it.

Maximize your level of sun protection.  Sun overexposure is the culprit for so many forms of skin damage – skin cancer, wrinkles, sagging skin, hyperpigmentation, etc. But while it’s one of the most pressing dangers to our skin, sun damage is also one of the easiest dangers that we can protect ourselves against.  When picking a sunscreen, make sure to select one that offers broad-spectrum protection – a high SPF alone simply won’t cut it. A broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays, whereas SPF ratings only measure a sunscreen’s ability to protect against UVB rays.  Additionally, make sure to apply your sunscreen every day, approximately every two hours – after two hours, the sunscreen’s effects wear off and your skin is woefully unprotected against UV rays. Do you rely on sun-protective makeup? Don’t! True, some skincare products and cosmetics do offer sun protection, but they simply can’t match the degree of defense achieved using an actual sunscreen. Instead, pair a sunscreen with your sun-protective makeup to maximize protection (Skin Cancer Foundation).

But wearing a sunscreen isn’t the only way to maximize your level of sun-protection. When possible, you wear darker colors (black, royal blue, etc.) and heavier fabrics like denim and corduroy, since these can offer more protection than your typical light summer colors and thin, summery fabrics like cotton and linen. For added protection, you may also want to wash your clothes in sun-protective detergent, whose effects are typically active even after several washings (Skin Cancer Foundation, American Skin Association).

Change your skincare products as the seasons change. As humans, we love routine and familiarity, but applying the same few products to your skin year in and year out will do precious little to make your skin healthy and gorgeous.  Both age and changing temperatures alter how we must cater to our skin, which is why we recommend changing your skincare routine as the seasons change. For example, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery suggests that you transition from using a lotion to a cream during the fall and winter months, as your skin will need a thicker moisturizer to hydrate it. If you’re having some trouble differentiating a “heavy” from a “light” moisturizer, look for winter moisturizers that contain oil instead of water, since oil can create a nice protective barrier against biting winter winds (WebMD).

Additionally, while we recommend using an exfoliating serum throughout the year, you may want to look for one with a higher concentration of keratolytic (exfoliating) ingredients to sweep away flakes of hardened, dead skin that accumulate during the colder months (The Loop). Finally, don’t forget to use a sunscreen every day during the year! Always look for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays, in addition to reapplying your sunscreen every one to two hours.

 Bottom Line

Upgrading your skincare routine doesn’t mean tossing away your current cache of products and devices and buying a whole new supply (although we’re not really ones to say “no” to a shopping spree). Rather, there are some simple and easy tips that anyone can use to make their skincare routine noticeably more robust, and their skin significantly healthier. Some of our favorite tips include:

  • Using the Spin for Perfect Skin to  save money on cleansing and exfoliating devices and achieve beautiful skin in the process.
  • By subscribing to our Subscribe & Save program, you can save money on replacement brush heads and use the savings to purchase more products to beautify your skin.
  • In addition to changing the products that you use in accordance with the seasons, we also recommend that you wear a sunscreen every day and look for ways to maximize your skin’s level of sun protection.
